My name is Laura Jenkins and I destroy books. Just kidding. I recycle books and like to think that I am saving the “well loved” and slightly worn out ones from a slow moldy landfill death.
I have always been quite artsy-crafty. I even went so far as to graduate from the Ontario College of Art & Design. This was followed by 4 years of waitressing, flower arranging, and picture framing “mini-careers” until I decided to return to school to pursue a nursing degree. Regardless of what my “day job” has been, I have always had some sort of project on the go. I enjoy finding ways to create functional pieces, using unconventional materials or processes.
One afternoon, shortly after receiving an e-reader for Christmas, I was on my way to Goodwill to drop off a box of old books. I must have been feeling particularly inspired that day, or in need of a new project, because I found myself wondering if there was something else that I could do with those books. I decided that I would attempt to turn them into pieces of jewelry. Once I realized that I could do this, I decided that I would attempt to sell jewelry online. In 2011, The Unwritten Word was born.
So now I create jewelry from the pages of classic novels. I design and create each earring, bracelet, and necklace in my home “studio” aka. couch and/ or kitchen table, in Hamilton, ON. I sell my work on ETSY www.theunwrittenword.etsy.com and have been participating in art/craft shows (which I love) since the summer of 2012. I love what I’m doing, and the business is constantly changing and evolving, as new designs and new opportunities emerge. I can’t wait to see what comes next…
Thanks for dropping by!
Laura
